Dogs drool, it is a natural behavior
Why do some dog breeds drool more than others. Well, some breeds, like the Saint Bernard, has very lose skin around its facial area. This can cause saliva to escape and drip on to the floor.
While you cannot prevent it. You can help it some by wiping of excess slobber whenever it becomes to much. Additionally you may want to encourage chewing by giving the dog a bone or one of many chew toy varieties.
Breeds which are notorious droolers include Saint Bernards, Bulmastifs, Basset Hounds and Newfoundlands.

If your dog breaks a tooth or it attracts an infection in its gums. It can suddenly start to drool more than usual. It is not always easy to know when it has broken a tooth as dogs often do not show many signs of pain in their teeth or otherwise.
Inspect your pet dogs teeth regularly and take it to a vet if you detect or suspect any problems. You can help keep your dogs teeth healthy by brushing them periodically. There are special tooth paste available for dogs that does not foam as much as the human variations do. There are also dental chew rolls available. Your vet can also clean your dogs teeth for you. Preventing serious infection from occurring.
Dogs drool for many reasons
Excessive drooling in dogs can be caused by many other things as well. Including allergic reactions, digestive problems, stings, bites, nausea, epilepsy, nervousness, heat stroke and more.
Some of these may be dangerous to the dogs health and should be checked out by a professional. This is especially true if the dog all of a sudden starts to drool uncontrollably.

We had two Great Danes and they didn't drool. We also had a New Foundland and she didn't drool. You can find dry mouth in dog breeds that are droolers. Big dogs usually do drool when they drink water. Loved your Hub

Isn't drooling the worse thing a dog can do?
I hate it too, as do most dog owners. Of course, it has a lot to do with the over breeding and genetics being messed with over the years by dog breeders.
Such a shame really.

What a gross topic, but interesting to dog lovers. Our huge yellow lab gets this LONGGGGGGGGGG string of drool when you cook dinner, eat, etc., We have to put him outside when we eat or things get gross :(
Why is it, when my mum brings her new puppy over to visit, my 7 year old lab starts to drool non stop until the puppy goes? Its so irritating!
i have a 13 week old puppy that only drools when we put her into her kennel. it can be not even an hour and she is soaked in her own saliva. its gross and getting annoyed with all the baths I have to give her.
anyone know of a reason or solution?

Great info. My dad hates it when my APBT and my mom's St Bernard/Collie mix drinks water and drools half of it out as their walking away from the water bowl.
